Investments for malaria research and prevention has come from bilateral donors, foundations, corporations and international agencies such as the President’s Malaria Initiative and the Global Fund but funding lags behind as programs expanded from 3 African countries to 18 in the past 10 years. However, households in many African countries still bear the brunt of out-of-pocket expenses for malaria prevention and cure, despite subsidized programs such as provision of antimalarial drugs in pregnancy (clinic costs and other medicines are charged to patients). This article documents those out-of-pocket costs for several countries. In some settings, community health workers can reduce diagnosis and treatment costs versus private physician providers’ bills.
