Child Health

Diarrhea, pneumonia and malaria are responsible for nearly half of all deaths in children under 5 years of age in Africa and Asia. In combination with broader efforts aimed at making pregnancy and childbirth safer, which has a tremendous impact on child health, current global efforts focus on integrating key lifesaving interventions with maternal, newborn and child health services. Examples are oral rehydration therapy and zinc for diarrhea; antibiotics for pneumonia; artemisinin-combination therapy (ACT) and bed nets for malaria; and immunizations—which are estimated to prevent three million child deaths each year.
